As far as she knew, she’d never walked in her sleep, but she didn’t remember ever having slept that close to temptation, either. She unpacked, hung up her clothes, opened the window, and looked out at the Chesapeake Bay. The curtains flapped in the breeze and she stripped, flung her arms wide, and let the cool salty air caress her naked body. She heard his steps, dashed to the closet, and put on a robe, but he didn’t pause at her door. She stretched out on the bed, testing it for comfort, and a knock on her door awakened her nearly two hours later.

“Are you all right?” Justine called to her. “I’ve begun to worry.”

She got up and opened the door. “I guess this is what happens when you’re not used to fresh air. I’m fine. Thanks for having me.”

“We’re delighted. Come on down and meet our daughter.”

She scrubbed and buffed her face, put on a pair of white shorts, a yellow blouse, and white espadrilles, let her hair down, and skipped down the stairs. Voices led her to the patio on the shaded side of the house, where Blake stood and walked toward her as she stepped onto the patio.

“I almost whistled,” he said, “but I figured I’d better be on my good behavior.” He stepped to within inches of her, took her hand, and smiled down into her face. “You’re so lovely and so…so perfect in that getup.”

She knew that what she felt right then blazed on her face, but she didn’t care. Not with this black Adonis towering over her within kissing distance, telling her she looked great. His fawnlike eyes darkened to obsidian, and his Adam’s apple moved rapidly while he looked at her. Mesmerizing. His masculine aura swirling around her like sea foam in a storm. If she didn’t corral her thoughts, what he read on her face wouldn’t be conducive to polite, company patter.

Her effort to do so didn’t succeed. All she could think of as he stared down into her face was the way she’d felt when he lay embedded deep within her, rocking her to the stratosphere. Teasing and taunting until he forced her to give herself up to him. Driving her out of herself until she died a little.

She watched his breathing quicken, his stance widen, and his pupils dilate, and didn’t doubt that he’d read her thoughts. Then, as if to suggest that he’d bewitched her deliberately, he winked, and she knew he’d brought himself under control.

Determined not to let him get the better of her, she reminded him of his earlier admonition to her. “Keep the coals bedded down? Is that what you said? Take some of your own advice.”

He laughed, and oh, how she loved to see him open up and let the joy flow out.

“I never saw you laugh so freely and so much until I got back from Italy. Now you laugh a lot, and I love to see it.”

He took her hand. “Come around here and meet Tonya.
